Meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Minutes from May 6, 2002 meeting were reviewed and approved,
Discussion centered on a proposal to add a "Park Ranger(s)" to the City staff. The proposed position would primarily be on
duty in the evenings and weekends and would oversee the use of the facilities. Amy Lesner cited many examples of
vandalism that have occurred in the parks over the last year that may be curtailed if the parks are being patrolled on a
regular basis.
A Park Rangers would add visibility, check on facility rentals, and assist in a public relations effort between the City and
the users of the facilities. Other local cities such as Winter Park employ such a position and Amy will attempt to obtain a
copy of the job description.
The committee suggested that Amy compile information on the cost to repair vandalism in the parks as well as other
possible savings to help offset the cost of adding this position. This proposal should be presented as part of the upcoming
budget workshops.
Other ideas were raised on deterring vandalism to the parks:
• Addition of security lighting in needed areas
• More involvement with the various leagues that utilize the facilities
• Neighborhood watch type programs with recognition/reward of their help
