MEMORANDUM
TO: Wayne Saunders, City Manager
FROM: Joe Van Zile, Administrative Services Director
DATE: August 22, 2012
RE: Revised City Manager Retirement Agreement
The City Council approved a voluntary retirement agreement with City Manager
Wayne Saunders on July 10, 2012. The agreement provides for Mr. Saunders to
voluntarily accept reassignment from the position of City Manager to an
employee with consulting responsibilities and duties, effective January 1, 2013.
The agreement further provides that Mr. Saunders would continue in this position
until his retirement from the City on January 1, 2014.
In an effort to facilitate the hiring of a new city manager prior to January 1, 2013,
Mr. Saunders has agreed to revise his current retirement agreement in the
following manner. The proposed revised agreement provides for Mr. Saunders
to accept reassignment from the position of City Manager to an employee with
consulting responsibilities on October 15, 2012 and would serve in this capacity
until his revised City retirement date of May 27, 2013. In addition, the proposed
revised agreement provides for a severance payment equal to twenty (20) weeks
of compensation to Mr. Saunders on his retirement date. Due to the reduced
time frame in serving as a reassigned employee, the revised agreement provides
a savings to the City of approximately $41,400
