Jim Grant commented on the need for additional recreation opportunities in the
Lincoln Park area. City Manager Saunders stated that the existing playground and
basketball courts are owned by the School Board, however, the City has historically
maintained the facility. Earlier this year, however, a citizens group entered into an
agreement with the School Board to improve and take over maintenance of the
playground area. It appears that the maintenance has not been what was expected and
he anticipated that the City would again take over maintenance of this park facility.
Recreation Director
Matt Modica stated that he felt that it was time for the City to consider hiring a full-
time recreation director. City Manager Saunders stated that this was an issue that has
been discussed for several years during budget time. Currently the duties are shared
between the City Manager's office and Public Services and the City is fortunate in
having several volunteer organizations that run excellent programs. He explained that
it has been the City's habit in the past to avoid duplication of services, however, as
the City grows, we will need to provide a full-time recreation department to
coordinate our facilities and provide programs that are not being provided by
volunteers.
Committee Re-organization
City Manager Saunders stated that the recreation committee is being re-organized to
become more active. An election of officers should take place at the next meeting.
Next Meeting Set
The next meeting date was set for September 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the Council
