'Whereas, President Abraham Lincoln's executive order to free all slaves
became law on January 1, 1863, however slavery in Texas did not end until more
than two years later on June 19, 1865, when United States troops commanded by
General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas with the express purpose of
enforcing Lincoln's order; and
'Whereas, General Granger's Order Number 3 finally freed the 250,000 slaves
whose bondage had been essentially unaffected by the President's efforts; and
Whereas, the anniversary of this day is observed annually on June 19`h and has
become known as Juneteenth, a day commemorating freedom for the former Texas
slaves and their descendants; and
'Whereas, Juneteenth is also a time to join together as free men and women;
regardless of race, nationality or religion, in appreciation and with a spirit of
reconciliation;
.Now, Therefore, I, Gail L. Ash, Mayor of the City of Clermont in the State
of Florida, do hereby proclaim June 19, 2015 as
