Bullying CLER ONT -"....rrace of C - 'WHEREAS, bullying is comprised of direct behaviors such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, and stealing, as well as indirect behaviors such as spreading rumors and acting in ways to cause a student to be socially isolated through intentional exclusion, with all such behaviors resulting in physical or psychological intimidation; and WHEREAS, each day an estimated 160,000 children refuse to go to school because they dread the physical and verbal aggression of their peers, and many more students attend school in a chronic state of anxiety; and 'WHEREAS, bullying in schools is a pervasive problem that can have negative consequences for the school climate and for the right of students to learn in a safe environment without fear, and one that can have negative lifelong consequences, both for students who bully and for their targets; and 1NHERE.AS, it is important we acknowledge and heighten awareness about the serious issues and the negative effects of bullying, including the long term damage it can cause in our children as well as the risks of teenage suicide; and 1N3(ERE..4S, those who stand by passively watching or actively encouraging bullying are also affected by these hostile acts; they encourage bullying by creating an audience, they may become desensitized to cruelty, they may learn to imitate bullying behavior and become bullies themselves; and WHEREAS, it is recognized that the Lake County School Board has adopted an Anti-Bullying Policy and is committed to providing a safe, positive, productive, and nurturing educational environment for all students and employees and encourages all cases of bullying to be reported immediately through its Safe School program without fear of retaliation; and WHEREAS, it is time to be "STARS CLAP" — Someone That Acts Responsible Standing on Courage Love Awareness and Positivity, united as a community against bullying; NO147, 7:9CERE,'ORE, I, Gail L. Ash, Mayor of the City of Clermont, do hereby proclaim the City of Clermont's full support to the Lake County School Board Safe Schools program and Florida Senate Committee Substitute for House Bill 229 "Bullying and Harassment Policies in Schools" in a sincere desire that in the near future we can afford all students a safe physical and emotional environment.
