Whereas, President Abraham Lincoln's executive order to free all slaves became law
on January 1, 1863, however slavery in Texas did not end until more than two years later
on June 19, 1865, when United States troops landed in Galveston to free the last men and
women held in slavery; and
Whereas, the anniversary of this day is observed annually on June 19th and has become
known as Juneteenth, a day commemorating the end of slavery; and
Whereas, Juneteenth is a time to join together as free men and women; regardless of
race, nationality or religion, in appreciation and with a spirit of reconciliation; and
Whereas, Juneteenth is also an occasion to reflect on the struggles of those who lived
under slavery and to honor the sacrifices of those who fought to end it; and
JVOW,'Therefore, I, Tim Murry, Mayor of the City of Clermont in the State of Florida,
do hereby proclaim the 19th of June, Two Thousand and Twenty Three as:
Juneteenth CeCebration Day
In Witness 'Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the
City of Clermont to be affixed this 13th Day of June in the year Two Thousand and Twenty
Three.
