JOINT WORKSHOP WITH LAKE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD
May 17, 2005
The Clermont City Council met in a joint workshop session with the School Board of Lake County on Tuesday, May 17,
2005 in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Mayor Hal Turville called the workshop to order at 6:00 pm with the
following Council Members present: Keith Mullins, Ray Goodgame, Gail Ash and Elaine Renick. The Lake County
School Board members present were: Chairman Scott Strong, Vice Chairman Jimmy Conner, Kyleen Fischer, Becky
Elswick and Larry Metz. Other City officials present were: City Manager Saunders, Assistant City Manager Gray, City
Attorney Mantzaris, and City Clerk Ackroyd. Other School Board officials present were: Superintendent Anna Cowin
and Attorney Stephen Johnson.
Council Member Goodgame gave the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Mayor Turville introduced members of the Lake County School Board and the City Council, He advised all in attendance
the City of Clermont has advertised this joint session as a workshop which does not allow the Council to vote however the
School Board advertised this as a special meeting which gives their board the authority to vote, if they wish to do so.
City Manager Saunders stated that a Resolution has been drafted addressing the issue of overcrowding schools in South
Lake County.
The City Council was all in agreement to approve this Resolution.
The School Board members of Lake County supported the proposed Resolution. It will be an effective first step to help
• solve the problem of overcrowding in the schools.
Superintendent Anna Cowin noted the costs have increased to construct schools adding that land donation is not enough.
She suggested other alternatives to include cities helping to obtain upfront funds or for cities to build charter schools.
Both Boards were in agreement with the proposed Resolution and encouraged in having a unified effort to move forward.
Mayor Turville requested placing the Resolution on the next City Council meeting agenda scheduled for May 24, 2005.
The following audience members spoke in support of the proposed Resolution: Tammy Phelps, Ann Dupee, Cindy
Barrow, John Harrison, Jim Purvis, Sandy Reeves, Rob Kelly, and Larry Walker with the City of Groveland.
