07-29-1975 Regular MeetingREPORT OF POLICE AND FIRE STATION IMPROVEMENT
SUBCOMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON JULY 29, 1975
Present were: Chairman, Tom K. Dougherty; Members, Ben Cunningham and Jane
Wilkins; Chief of Police, Prentice Tyndal; Director of Community Services, Bob
• Smythe; and Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman, Henry Czech.
FIRE DEPARTMENT: Director Bob Smythe reported on the capabilities of the fire
department. The fire protection is presently provided by a volunteer staff that is
on call. He reported that for this type of protection, the equipment and facilities
are adequate and that any expansion of protection would entail a full-time fire
department which would result in a greatly increased cost to the city. Subcommittee
members were in agreement that because of the expected growth in central Florida within
the next two years, any planning for fire protection expansion should be delayed
until a more definite growth trend has been established in Clermont.
POLICE DEPARTMENT: Chief Prentice Tyndal informed the subcommittee that his
department is adequately staffed and that the detention facilities are more than
adequate but that the office space for administrative and investigative tasks is
inadequate and that more space is needed immediately. As was the case with the fire
protection, the subcommittee members felt that any expansion of police protection
did not seem necessary and could wait until the expected growth in 1977. However, the
subcommittee members agreed that the police department did need additional space for
their current operation. It was decided that Chief Tyndal would acquire data showing
the existing area available for his department and the data showing how much additional
space is needed. Chief Tyndal will present this information at the next scheduled
meeting on August 26, 1975, at 3:00 p.m.
Also discussed was the possibility of a county court annex being located in
Clermont if the municipal courts are abolished and the possibility of Clermont
providing police protection to Minneola under contract.
Respectfully Submitted,
TOM K. DOUGHERTY, Chairman
