After canvassing the ballots, a brief discussion ensued concerning
the outcome of Tuesday night's Planning and Zoning Commission
Meeting. It was reported by Mayor Pool that the Planning and
Zoning Commission had unanimously recommended approval of the
proposed shopping center to be located on Grand Highway, north of
the present Quincy's Restaurant. It was also reported that the
Hurtaks, owners of South Lake Plaza, had a release clause in the
leases of Publix and K Mart and the stores they now occupy in South
Lake Plaza would not sit vacant for the remainder of the leases
should they move to the new shopping center.
Council Member Dupee stated that she had spoken with Mr. Hurtak
concerning the possibility of the City purchasing the K Mart
portion of the shopping center for city hall and he had been
receptive to the idea and would be willing to discuss it with City
Staff. Mrs. Dupee further stated that this was another option the
City could consider for a city hall site.
Mrs. Dupee also reminded those present that Wednesday, November 13,
1991, was Adolphus Church Appreciation Day and tickets for the
appreciation dinner were available at her office at $10.00. Mrs.
Dupee also stated that she would like the Council to consider
naming one of the Little League Fields after Mr. Church who has
devoted considerable time throughout the years to Little League and
the children of Clermont.
Council Member Cole asked if any information had been received
concerning the cause of the fire that distroyed the apartments on
Desoto Street. No one had heard the results of the Fire Marshall's
investigation. A brief discussion of the area ensued and City
Clerk Van Zile stated that the building in question was under
Condemnation Proceedings filed by City Attorney Baird. It was the
consensus of Council that this was one of the most blighted areas
in the City and that something needed to be done to improve it.
