An adjourned meeting of the City Council of the City of
Clermont was held in the office of the City Clerk on Tuesday,
January 17, 1961. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P. M.
by Council Chairman Clarence Bishop with all Council members
being present. Other City Officials present were: Mayor BonJorn,
City Attorney Morse, Clerk Johnson, Deputy Clerk Williams,
Superintendent Sheldon and Inspector Snyder and Police Chief
Tyndall. rlepresentatives of the Orlando Sentinel and local
press were also present.
The minute s of the regular meet ing held Tue sday, January
13, 1961 and the Organi~ational Meeting held on the same date
were read and approved.
Report s:
Police Chief Tyndal stated he had nothing to report.
Building Inspector Snyder reported he had nothing t 0
report.
:::iuperintendent Sheldon stated he had nothing to report
but that he would like to have permission to secure
bids on fire hose. Motion was made by Mr. Boyd, seconded
by Mr. Pool and carried, that bids be secured on the
fire hose as proposed by Mr. 0heldon.
I'1r. Boyd, Chairman of the Water Committee, reported
that new water mains were being laid along Lake Shore
Drive at the present time.
I'1r. Pool, Chairman of the Parks and Cemetery Committee,
reported that he [lad just received plat s of the proposed
cemetery addition and that he and the committee would go
over them and that they would have reports and recommenda-
tions at the next meeting.
Mr. Pool suggested that signs be procured stating uPerons
damaging this property will be prosecuted II and that such
signs be posted on all city-owned property. No action
taken on this matter.
Mr. Turville, member of the Parks and Cemetery Committee,
stated that the negro citizens desired additional bathing
beach fac ilit ie s and that he had adv i sed them that whe n
they had a concrete plan to offer the city that the city
would help them in any way possible with whatever funds
might be available.
Mr. Boyd, report ing as a member of the Street s Commit tee,
stated that the Streets Committee had made an investigation
of the request made by Mr. Keefer for certain work to be
done on the alley in the rear of his property and that,
inasmuch as the improvement of the alley as requested by
Mr. Keefer would be to the benefit of the general public
and a definite safety measure, he moved that Mr. Sheldon
be instructed to proceed with such improvement. The motion
was seconded by Mr. York and carried.

Motion was made by Mr. William Boyd, seconded by Hr. Harold
Turville and carried, that Mr. Charles rioe be appointed as a
Director on the Board of the Lake' Apopka Natural Gas District.
Clerk Johnson read a letter from the Lake County League
of Municipalities inviting local city officials to attend the
League'S meeting being held in Tavares on Wednesday, January 18,
1961 at 6 :30 P. M. in the new Civic Center. Messrs. Bishop,
Pool, Turville and Boyd stated their intention to attend.
Clerk Johnson read a letter rrom Hamilton, straughn and
Sharit pertaining to the possibility of using existing racilities
for the canning of fruit and vegetable juices with alcoholic
content added. JVlayor BonJorn was requested to secure additional
information regarding this matter.

Clerk Johnson read a copy of a letter from Mr. Mimms, State
Road Department Maintenance Engineer, to P. W. Ekey, Assistant
District Engineer, with regards to the possibility of locating
traffic light s on Highway "50 II at it s inter sect ions with B'ifth
and Eighth Streets. Some discussion regarding this matter
followed. A motion was made by JVlr. Bishop, seconded by Mr. Pool
and carried, that JVlayor BonJorn reque st the State Road Department
to make a survey and traffic count at the intersections of
Highway "50 Ii and Fifth, Eighth and 'l'welfth street s.
Clerk Johnson submitted an engineering report on the li@1ting
of Eighth Street between Highway "50 II and DeSoto Street at a,
cost to the City of ~ 2. 75 per month. Not ion was made by Mr.
Turville, seconded by Mr. Pool and carried, that Florida Power
be requested to proceed with the installation of the lights
along Eighth Street as outlined in their engineering report,
provided that the necessary precaution be taken to avoid any
glare which might affect the hospital.
JVlotion was made by Mr. Turville, seconded by Mr. Boyd
and carried1 that H. W. Sheppard & Company be engaged by the
City as auditors for the fiscal year 1960-61.
Motion was made by Mr. Turville, seconded by JVlr. Boyd
and carried, that the City 'riax Asse s SOl' be author ized to employ
the services of Hunnicutt and Associates to make appraisals
of all new construction in the city.
Mr. vlilliam Boyd reported that JVlr. A. H. Sandlin had adv i sed
him that his garage had been demolished by having a large tree
blow over on it during the st orm lIDonna II last raIl and that
upon making a request to the City to erect a new garage on
the same foundation he had been refused due to the fact that
such location did not meet with city zoning requirements. Mr.
Boyd f"urther stated that taking all the circumstances into
consideration that it was his opinion that JVlr. Sandlin should
be allowed to construct a garage on the old location. and that
he moved that the Building Inspector advise Mr. Sandlin that
he might proceed with such construction. ~he motion was
seconded by Mr. Turville and carried.
Clerk Johnson read a letter !rom the Christian Science
Society calling the City's attention to needed sidewalk repairs
adjacent to their property. 'l'his matter was referred to the
Street s Committee with authority to take the nece ssary act ion
to correct the situation.

Clerk Johnson read a letter !'rom Mr. .B.adosti wherein lIir.
Handosti advised the Council that he had been unable to vacate
the Snack Bar Building located at the Jaycee Beach by January 12
as directed, and that ne would very much appreciate additional
time. Motion was made by lI'!r. York, seconded by 11r. Pool and
carried, that Jllayor BonJorn advise lVIr. liadosti that ne would be
granted an extension 01 time until l1'ebruary .1, .1961, but that
the premises must be vacated by this date. Mr. Boyd suggested
that Hayor BonJorn investigate all applicants for operators
of the J'aycee Beach re staurant.
Mayor BonJorn and City Attorney Morse reported on a meeting
with Dr. Hall of the Lake County Health Department with regards
to the procurement of a city dump and the completion of the
cleaning of West Lake. Hayor BonJorn further reported that it
was his opinion that a satisfactory arrangement would be worked
out regarding this matter and that Dr. Hall further desired
that the City of Clermont furnish a suitable loc at ion upon
which to construct a County Health Clinic. Hayor BonJorn
suggested several possible locations. Mr. Boyd suggested
that Mayor BonJorn proceed with negotiations with Dr. Hall
and that when they had decided upon a suitable location for
the clinic that the Council would. then go into the matter.

Mr. Pool, Chairman of tile Parks and Cemetery Committee,
advised the Council that the South Lake Memorial Hospital was
in need of a retaining wall on the east side of their property
in order that they might carry out a beautification program
and that the estimated cost would be;p750. 00 and that he
recommended that this cost be borne partly by the City, partlY
by the County and partly by public donations. No action was
taken on this matter.
A list of names was prepared by members of the Council
as possible members of the ~oning Commission and the Board
of Adjustment and such lists were turned over to the City
Clerk in order that he might contact the persons in question
and determine whether or not they would serve if they were
appoint ed.
Motion by Mr. York, secpnded by Mr. Turville and carried,
that the meeting adjourn.
