SPECIAL MEETING
A special meeting of the City Council of the City of Clermont was
held in the office of the City Clerk on Tuesday, March 16, 1965.
The meeting was called to order by Mayor BonJorn at 9:15 A. M. with
all Councilmen present. Others present were City Attorney Langley, Clerk
Johnson and ~epresentatives of the press.
Mayor BonJorn stated that the meeting had been called at the request of
Council President, James Hoskinson and that Mr. Hoskinson wished to make a
report to the Council.
Mr. Hoskinson reported to the Council that Mr. Blanton, a representa-
tive of Publix Super Markets, had met with the Mayor, the City Attorney,
th~ City Clerk and himself on Monday afternoon and that the said Mr. Blanton
had advised them that Publix Super Markets would like to donate to the
City of Clermont their old store building located on the corner of Seventh
and Montrose Streets. Mr. Hoskinson further advised that the only stipulation
was that the City of Clermont assume responsibility for the payment of taxes
for the year 1965 and that the property be restricted to municipal use.
Motion was made by Mr. Hoskinson, seconded by Mr. York, and carried,
that the City Council accept the offer made by Publix Super Markets and
that the Clerk prepare a Resolution of appreciation to be forwarded to them.
Clerk Johnson advised the Council that he had received a sample deed
from the Seaboard Airline Railroad to the City of Clermont for the abandoned
right-of-way and that he had turned the deed over to Mr. Langley, the City
Attorney, for examination and a report.
Mr. Langley advised the Council that insofar as the preparation of the
deed was concerned that it was quite satisfactory but that he wanted the
members of the Council to thoroughly understand that it was only a "quit
claim" deed and that such title was not merchantable 'and was not proof of
ownerShip.
Mr. Langley was advised that the City Council members were fully aware
that the property deed in question was not a merchantable title but that in
their opinion the property,:was weE!. worth.:.;t~e' ,'amount which they were paying
and that they wished to proceed with the transaction.
A discussion tooK place with regards to the proposed charter amendment -
as it pertains to a tax on the sale of fuel oil within the City. It was
decided that the adjourned Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 16,
at 7:30 P. M. would be adjourned until Tuesday, March 23, at 7:30 P. M. in
order that the Mayor and Council members could attend the public hearing on
the proposed tax on fuel oil sales.
Motion was made by Mr. York, seconded by Mr. Turvilleand carried,
that the meeting adjourn.
