REGULAR MEETING

A Regular meeting af the city Council of the City of Clermont
was held at the city hall Tuesday, August 7, 1956.
The meeting was called to order by Council President, Harold
Turville, with the following members present: Turville,
Jensen and Meeker. Absent Grant. Beals was present for a
small part of the meeting. Others present were Mayor Boyd,
Supt. Sheldon, City attorney Morse, Police Chief Clark, Tax
Assessor Stanley, Mr. Pennington, Mrs. Jackson, Mr. Stuldz
and Mr. Gettys.
The minutes of the meetings held July 17th and July 3lst of
1956 were read and approved.
Mrs. Jackson asked the Council to please desiginate some
location satisfactory to the city where it would be possible
for her to obtain a beer license from the city. Mrs. Jackson
was informed that she would be notified later regarding the
matter. After Mrs. Jackson lef't a discussion took place
with regards her request and clerk Johnson was instructed to
notify her that the city would be agreeable to a location in
the Lincoln Park area, provided that the building was not less
than 500 feet from a church and not Ie s s than I, 000 feet from
a school and further provided that the building was equ~pped
with rest rooms for both men and women.
Mr. Pennington spoke to the council with regards higher wages
for laborers; stating that under present conditions it waS
inpossible to keep his bills paid with existing wages. Mr.
Pennington was informed that it was 1.Jnpossible to raise wages
under the present budget, but that the matter would certainly
be given every consideration when making up the new budget.
Mr. Stuldz and I'lr. Getty informed the council that they would
like City of Clermont liquor license for the operation of a
cocktail lmunge at Florida Towers inc. They were informed
that they would be given an answer as soon as Mr. Beals
arrived.
Mr. Meeker, chairman of the Streets Committee, stated that V~
todate the city had been able to secure only one bid for the
paving of Disston street.
Motion was made by Meeker, seconded by Jensen and carried that
the city purchase 5,000 feet of six inch transite pipe and that
the city proceed with the extension of a six inch water line to
Florida Towers, Inc. as soon as possible.
Motion by Meeker, seconded by Jensen and carried that the
City purchase 100 feet of twelve inch drain and that such
drainage pipe be used to correct an existing condition off
second street in the Ball Park area.

Motion by Jensen, seconded by Meeker and carried that Mr. George
Nagel be entaged to prepare a "Water map" of the city at a cost
not to exceed $50.00.
Mr. Turville, chairman of the Sidewalks committee, reported that
his committee did not think it advisable to order a sidewalk
constructed along Montrose street, from existing sidewalks
Westward to 12th street, as it would work a hardship on the
property owners and that the walk would be used very little.
I1r. Turville further stated that the property owners on West
Avenue, from Montrose to DeSoto streets did not want a sidewalk.

Mr. Beals arrived at this time and a discussion took place
relative to the issuance of a liquor license to Tower's
Re sturant . Mot ion was made by Meeker, and seconded by Jensen
that Cl'-rk Johnson be instructed to issue a liquor license
to 'Power's Resturant when they made the proper application and
paid the required fee. On roll call vote the ayes were Turville,
Jensen and Meeker. Nays: Beals. Absent: Grant.
A final inspection of the adjusted tax roll took place and said
roll was accepted and ordered turned over to the Tax Assessor
for final work.
Mayor Boyd recommended that the city complete all projects
already authorized for this fiscal year before undertaking any
nel'l work.
Mr. Meeker recommended that parking be prohibited at all
times on Osceola street from Fifth street Eastward for aproximately
two hundeed feet.
Mayor Boyd recommended the construction of sidewalks on Osceola
street from Second, street to East avenue and on East avenue from
Osceola Street to the School. It was decided to wait Until
after the start of school and then make a survey to determine the
need for the walW.
Chairman Turville appointed the following persons to the Electrical
Examination board of the city of Clermont: Mr. Chas. Holbrook
and Mr. E. T. Brantly as IvIaster Electricians and Mr. Forre st
Cole grove and Mr. H. ~ 1 l~ / C E , Florida Power Corp,
employees. The City Supt. peing the fifth member of the Soard.

Police chief Blark submitted his monthly report. Some discussion
took place relative to the accuracy of the report after which it
was accepted and ordered filed.
Clerk Johnson read a letter from the Chamber of Commerce
relative to the condition of Grand Highway and requested that
some repairs be made. No action taken.
Clerk Johnson read a letter opposing the issuance of a liquor
license to Towers Resturant by the city. This letter was read
during the ~t~~~~~t~~ general discussion regarding the matter
recorded in the minutes in the early part of the meeting. The letter
was signed by Rev. Homer Click of the Grace Baptist church, Rev.
W. E. Rowel, First Methodist church, Rev. Martin Swanson, Lutheran
church and Rev. William Stepens of the Christian Alliance.
Motion by Meeker, seconded by Jensen and carried that bills
be paid.
It should be noted that it was necessary for Mr. Beals to
leave the meeting immediately following the vote on the
issuance of a liquor license to Tower's resturant and that
be was not present for any discussion or motions after that
time.

Motion by Meeker, seconded by Jensen that meeting adjourn.
