FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
CENTENNIAL SUNDAY
WHEREAS, the First United Methodist Church of Clermont,
Florida, will celebrate its 100th year of ministry in our City on
March 3, 1991; and
WHEREAS, Methodism in Clermont actually began in 1886 when a
few people met in the room above Mr. M. E. Wilson's General
Merchandise Store and later in the one-room school house on Broome
Street; and
WHEREAS, in 1891 Clermont pioneers built a small wooden church
building on land donated by Robert C. Hooks located at the
southeast corner of Seventh and Broome Streets; and
WHEREAS, the Florida Conference assigned Reverend Grant
Meadows to the officially constituted church body in 1891; and
WHEREAS, we give pause, honor and praise for the deep and
abiding Christian commitment of those who in faith began this work,
and for all those who have given so unselfishly during these many
years to help the work grow and thrive, and provide valuable human
services where the need was great; and
WHEREAS, our entire community has benefited from the fine
Christian influence this church has exerted through the years; and
WHEREAS, it is a pleasure to extend this expression of our
esteem and best wishes to the members of this congregation on the
memorable occasion of this anniversary;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert A. Pool, Mayor of the City of
Clermont, do hereby proclaim March 3, 1991, as
FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH CENTENNIAL SUNDAY
in our community and further provide that a copy of this tribute
be presented to the congregation in testimony of the high regard
in which this church is held in the City of Clermont.
