Earth Dayproclamation
MAYORAL PROCLAMATION
EARTH DAY
APRIL 22, 1990
WHEREAS, we are fortunate to live in a City and State so
bountifully endowed with natural assets and feel a continuing
responsibility for preserving our environment by keeping it clean,
healthy and beautiful, and
WHEREAS, twenty years ago on April 22, 1970, 20 million
Americans took part in the first EARTH DAY celebration because they
were tired of the growing menace of polluted air and water, the
ongoing destru ction of wildlife habitat, and the deteriorating
purity of our oceans from the shortsighted dumping of toxic
chemicals, and
WHEREAS, rising from this new environmental consciousness came
a number of important laws: The Marine Mammal Protection Act, ttze
Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Clean Air Act
to name a few, and
WHEREAS, today, twenty years later we now know that laws alone
cannot stop the continuing destruction of our environment as
evidenced by the current problems ~~ith acid rain caused by
industrial wastes, solid waste disposal, devastating oil spills,
the wanton destruction of our tropical rain forests, the growing
number of endangered species, the disappearance of the ozone layer,
shrinking wetlands and more, and
WHEREAS, EARTH DAY 1990 is a national and international call
to action for all citizens to join in a global effort to save the
planet and ensure a quality of life we deserve, and
WHEREAS, EARTH DAY 1990 activities and events will educate all
citizens on the importance of buying and using only those products
least harmful to the environment,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Robert A. Pool, Mayor of the City of
Clermont do hereby proclaim and recognize April 22, 1990 as
EARTH DAY
in the City of Clermont and I call upon the citizens of Clermont
to become stewards of our environment because we but share Earth
with all other living things and to continually despoil and consume
only numbers our days. Let us renew the spirit of the first EARTH
DAY, and remember that environmental quality can become a reality,
and we have the opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to this
end on April 22, 1990.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Seal of the City of
Clermont to be affixed this 10th day of
April in the year of our Lord nineteen
hundred and ninety.
