RESOLUTION N0. 150
WHEREAS, We in Florida must prepare for the future invasion of
thirty million (30,000,000) travelers to our State each year spending
in excess of nine billion dollars ($9,000,000,000) annually in our
Sunshine State, and
WHEREAS, over five thousand (5,000) persons have lost their lives
on Florida's highways during the last 30 months and over a quarter of
a million (250,000) men, women and children have been injured in the
same period, and
WHEREAS, the economic loss to our Florida residents alone has
exceeded one billion dollars ($1,000,000,000) and further that we face
increased insurance rates, medical costs, and rising repair bills, and
WHEREAS, all vitally interested Floridians are extremely aware of
the inadequate road building program in Florida and further that Florida
needs eighty million dollars ($80,000,000) annually in excess of its
present funds for roads, and
WHEREAS, the Governor, in whose office is vested public opinion
and who has the legal authority to call a special session of the
legislature and further that it would be more meaningful to have the
chief executive authority behind such a program, NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Clermont, Florida
requests the Honorable Claude R. Kirk, Jr., Governor, to call a
special session of the legislature to properly fund the Department of
Transportation on a "pay as you go" basis to produce the vitally needed
road program, new income in sales tax, increased real estate value and
increased sales and construction of buildings and residences. New highways
are the life blood of each city and county of our State.
