R-89-649 -e e CITY OF CLERMONT RESOLUTIONS No. 649 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CLERMONT, LAKE COUNTY, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE RAILS TO TRAILS PROGRAM IN SOUTH LAKE COUNTY AND ENCOURAGING OTHER CITIES, PRIVATE CITIZENS AND THE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES TO DO THE SAME. WHEREAS, the State of Florida has established the Florida Recreational Trails System to encourage the development of regional recreational trails for bicycling, hiking, horseback riding and canoeing; and WHEREAS, the Lake Rails to Trails Program organiza tion brought together by the common goal network of quiet trails in Lake County; and is a citizen to create a WHEREAS, the Lake Rails to Trails Program advocates the preservation of abandoned railroad corridors as linear parks, and is desirous of preserving the remaining lands of the winter Garden to Mascotte corridor; and WHEREAS, the Department of Natural Resources has expended the three million dollars budgeted to purchase these lands for the acquisition of two other railroad corridors within the State, thus leaving the purchase of the Winter Garden to Mascotte corridor in doubt; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Clermont supports the Rails to Trails Program and is desirous of insuring that the remainder of the winter Garden to Mascotte corridor be preserved, as it has been within the city limits of Clermont, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the city of Clermont, Lake County, Florida, that the Council supports the establishment of a Florida Recreational Trails system in south Lake County, and has established that part of the Winter Garden to Mascotte corridor lying within the city limits of Clermont as a part our municipal parks system, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Clermont requests that the Department of Natural Resources include money in its budget to purchase the remaining winter Garden to Mascotte corridor and encourages those private citizens and other entities owning such lands to follow the example of the City of Clermont and dedicate them as part of the Lake Rails to Trails Program.
