Proclamation #2022-002PWhereas, the courage, dedication, self-sacrifice and compassion of the "ordinary heroes" of the World War II generation continue to inspire our nation, especially the men and women who are currently serving and protecting our country; and Whereas, the Armed Forces of the United States were segregated in World War II; and Whereas, in 1940 the US military selected Tuskegee Institute to train pilots because of its commitment to aeronautical training; its facilities, engineering and technical instructors; and a climate for year-round flying; after which the Tuskegee Program was expanded to become the center for African - American aviation during World War Il; and Whereas, the Tuskegee Airmen were active from 1941 to 1946 and overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most respected fighter groups of World War II, paving the way for full integration of the US Military; and Whereas, Clermont resident, Tuskegee Airman Lt. Daniel Keel, who is approaching his 1001 birthday, served as a Flight Officer in the Air Force from 1943 to 1946. Lt.
