Clermont Garden Club 50th AnniversaryCity of Clermont Clermont Garden Club 50th Anniversary Proclamation WHEREAS, the Clermont Garden Club was organized in 1948 under the leadership of "Mimi" Newald Maynard, who was serving as Director of District VII of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. Mrs. E. N. Smith served as the first club president and the club was initially comprised of three circles. WHEREAS, the Clermont Garden Club now consists of five circles and 140 members. One charter member (Mrs. Frances Oswalt) and 14 past presidents are still active in the organization. The club is affiliated with and active in the National Council of State Garden Clubs, The Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Deep South Region and District VII (which includes Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Sumter counties), and WHEREAS, the objectives of the Clermont Garden Club are to stimulate a knowledge and love of gardening and the artistic use of plant material; to aid in the protection of natural resources; to foster, encourage, promote and develop civic beautification in the City of Clermont and on public highways and roads entering Clermont; and to make available to all • persons of all races and of all ages information on general gardening. WHEREAS, the Clermont Garden Club has the honor of hosting the District meeting on May 7, 1999 and has chosen this day to celebrate the 50`x' anniversary of the organization. The City of Clermont joins in the celebration and recognizes the many worthwhile activities performed by the Club which include the Arbor Day seedling distribution, the Junior Gardener's program and scholarships for the FFGC Wekiva Youth Camp and SEEK (Save the Earth's Environment through Knowledge) Conference. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Harold S. Turville, Jr., Mayor of the City of Clermont, Florida hereby proclaim May 7, 1999 as CLERMONT GARDEN CLUB DAY in Clermont.
